Law Students and Judicial Clerks
Summer Associate Candidates
The Summer Associate Program is our primary source for recruiting first-year associates at Ballard Spahr. The goal of our Summer Associate Program is to provide a strong foundation of key skills, valuable experience, and important relationships that will allow our summer associates to launch successful careers at the firm.
Summer associates at Ballard Spahr receive substantive, on-the-job training. They complete meaningful assignments, participate in pro bono projects, develop mentor relationships with associates and partners, and have at their disposal a range of innovative training programs and valuable networking opportunities. They work side-by-side with our attorneys and are invited to attend department and practice group meetings throughout the summer.
A highlight of our program is the annual firmwide Summer Associate Retreat, when summer associates from all offices travel to Philadelphia for two days of training, networking, and social events. This experience promotes the development of relationships with colleagues across all practices and office locations.
You've worked hard—and you're almost there. We look forward to helping you discover your passion in the legal industry and to supporting you as you build a career.
Entry Level Associate Candidates
We review our hiring needs for entry level associate candidates on an ongoing basis. If you are interested in an entry level associate position after graduation from law school or upon completion of a judicial clerkship, we welcome you to submit an application here and we will keep your materials on file to review if any positions become available.
Summer Associate Training
Ballard Spahr is committed to developing attorneys at all levels of the firm, from summer associates to senior partners. In addition to extensive on-the-job training, our summer associates also participate in a series of speakers and workshops that cover a variety of topics such as legal research, writing, pro bono work, firm history, and business development.
Exceptional service and remarkable alliances with clients are hallmarks of the firm. Investing in the personal and professional development of our summer associates is a part of that commitment.
Summer Associate mentorship and feedback
We believe in transparency, and our summer associates receive continual feedback directly from the lawyers with whom they work.
We have a formal evaluation process that includes a midsummer check-in and end-of-summer review that encompasses valuable feedback from our lawyers on the quality of the summer associate's research, analysis, communication, judgment, and overall work product.
In addition to receiving personalized feedback from senior attorneys, each summer associate is assigned a mentor who will informally respond to any questions that may arise throughout the summer.
Summer Associate Social Events
The Ballard Spahr Summer Associate Program includes a variety of social and networking events to allow summer associates to get to know one another, our attorneys, and the communities in which they work.
Examples of past events in various offices include:
- Baseball game and stadium tour
- Golf tournament
- Team cooking challenge
- Crab feast
- Scenic walk/run and BBQ

Ballard exceeded my expectations in providing an impactful, collaborative, and fun virtual summer program. The firm has gone above and beyond to make me feel welcomed and valued during my internship. Although the program was virtual, I've meaningfully connected with colleagues, partners, and mentors, who I know I will keep in touch with throughout my career.
Anjie Zhi, Incoming Associate, Denver, Summer 2020
The Ballard summer program experience was incredible! I feel fortunate to have participated in a well-planned program. It was insightful working on various substantive projects. Each week included many opportunities to learn about the firm’s practices, participate in social activities, and meet warm and welcoming attorneys.
Brook Wubeshet, Incoming Associate, Minneapolis, Summer 2020
Ballard has two of the most important traits I wanted in a work environment: intellectually stimulating work and a culture that truly is like a family. The attorneys care about your success as a summer associate and provide countless opportunities for you to learn from them and work on meaningful assignments.
Omarr Rambert, Incoming Associate, Los Angeles, Summer 2019
Ballard's summer program prepares you for the life of an associate at a large and well-respected law firm. I had numerous opportunities to work on substantive projects, observe mediations, and participate in social events. I also developed mentoring relationships with partners and associates that will serve me well in the future.
Sarah Dannecker, Business and Transactions Associate, Minneapolis, Summer 2018
Ballard's 2016 Summer Program was an excellent representation of what to expect as an associate here. I received substantive work from multiple practice areas, and even communicated with clients. I also thoroughly enjoyed getting to know my colleagues during the Summer Associate Retreat in Philadelphia.
Kristel Tupja, Intellectual Property Associate, Philadelphia, Summer 2016
Ballard gave me the opportunity to work on a variety of substantive projects with very talented lawyers, which was instrumental in discovering the practice area that was right for me. The social events were always entertaining and I was consistently impressed with the level of engagement of Ballard attorneys – from junior associates to senior partners.
Tyler Cobb, Public Finance Associate, Phoenix, Summer 2012
I had a great summer experience at Ballard – whether it was attending a sentencing hearing, helping prepare a case for trial on behalf of a pro bono client, or preparing memoranda for partners on legal issues, every day brought new and interesting work. As summers, we were immediately welcomed onto the Ballard team, and when we weren't working, we were busy building relationships with partners, associates, and each other at receptions, lunches, and other activities across the city.
Jennifer Feden, Real Estate Associate, Philadelphia, Summer 2013
The Ballard Summer Associate program has the perfect balance of substantive work and social integration. My summer projects included projects as diverse as litigation research, contract drafting, and zoning appeals. On the social side, there were just enough events to get to know the attorneys in the office, but not be overwhelmed. The balanced summer program was the perfect way to kick off my firm career.
Alyssa Domzal, Real Estate Associate, Baltimore, Summer 2014
