Q&A: Lawyer Life with Devon Beverly

January 12, 2023

Devon Beverly sheds light on what it’s like to be a lawyer at Ballard Spahr through the following questions and answers. Devon is a Vanderbilt Law School graduate, has been an associate in our Real Estate Department for four years, and is based in Philadelphia.

Q: What’s the best part of your job?

Devon:  Reaching a desired outcome for a client, whether that is selling or buying a large multi-use or industrial building or obtaining a zoning permit for a large tower in Philadelphia. It’s a great feeling when everything comes together.

Q: What’s the most important thing you learned in law school that helps you succeed as a lawyer?

Devon:  Mastering time management and the ability to discern the important details of a matter. As an attorney, at any point in time, I’m working on a number of matters. Being able to efficiently prioritize what I’m working on and knowing the details of each matter are crucial skills for ensuring that our clients’ needs are met.

Q: What has surprised you the most about being a lawyer?

Devon: The number of emails that I can receive in a day!

Q: Why did you pick Ballard?

Devon: I ended up choosing Ballard because of the individuals that I met during my interview process and my time as a summer associate. The people that I met were not only incredibly intelligent, but also curious, dynamic and personable. They were people with whom I could see myself working.

Q: What advice do you have for law students who are navigating the recruiting process?

Devon: Don't be afraid to ask questions. As much as the firm is interviewing you, remember that you are also interviewing the firm. Ask questions about the type of work certain attorneys are working on and their pro bono practice. You should choose a firm that you believe will help you succeed, help hone your legal skills, and ultimately, help your practice.

Q: What do you like to do for fun when you aren’t working?

Devon: I love to read and to discover new coffee shops across Philadelphia.
