Litigation

Our Litigation Department is home to a deep bench of skilled and experienced litigators who vigorously represent clients around the country in a wide range of civil, criminal, and administrative matters.

With more than 250 attorneys in 15 offices nationwide, Ballard Spahr's Litigation Department is the firm's largest practice. We have compiled an outstanding track record of success in state and federal trial courts, appellate courts, administrative agencies, and arbitration forums. Our top-flight litigation practice has been named "Litigation Department of the Year" by The Legal Intelligencer in Philadelphia and the New Jersey Law Journal, and includes more than 40 leading litigation lawyers as ranked by Chambers USA. Our litigators work across practice groups and are fully conversant with the latest case law and cutting-edge issues and trends.

Ballard Spahr litigators work tirelessly to serve our clients' interests. We have extensive trial experience and have won both plaintiff and defense verdicts before juries, judges, and arbitrators in difficult, high-stakes cases. Our accomplished appellate lawyers have achieved numerous successes in appeals of cases handled at the trial level either by our firm or by other firms. We often handle cases involving preliminary injunctions and other emergency relief.

We coordinate closely with our clients in risk assessment and evaluate threatened or filed lawsuits to determine whether a prompt resolution or dismissal is feasible. If not, we proceed to litigate the case in an aggressive yet cost-effective manner. We have the ability to devote substantial resources to major matters as well as the case management expertise to effectively employ lean staffing, utilizing lawyers with the requisite experience, skill sets, and seniority.

Cost efficiencies also are achieved by the use of state-of-the-art case management support and technology resources. Our litigators consult with clients at every step of the way during a lawsuit, always mindful of the underlying business implications and litigation risks. Our overriding objective in every case is to secure a prompt and favorable outcome that meets the client's needs while minimizing burden, inconvenience, and expense.
