Microgrids

Educational campuses, large health care facilities and other campus-type commercial developments (including office/industrial parks and resorts) have an increasing interest in a secure, affordable, homegrown supply of electricity, including other forms of energy, and in being as "green" as feasible in their use and production of electricity. In recent years, Superstorm Sandy underlined the advantages accruing to institutions that can disconnect from the electric grid and keep the lights on, independent of the local utility.

Ballard Spahr's team supports the planning, development, financing, and implementation of microgrid projects, including the following disciplines:

  • Electric regulatory
  • Real estate and land use
  • Environmental and other permitting
  • Finance (often including a combination of financing sources, including tax-exempt and conventional financing, new markets and other tax credits, and capital markets)
  • Engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracting

Ballard Spahr has harnessed these capabilities efficiently and effectively to assist its clients in a variety of microgrid and similar projects.
