Ballard Spahr Litigator Matthew Ebert Inducted into American College of Trial Lawyers

October 26, 2026

Litigator Matthew Ebert, a former federal prosecutor based in Ballard Spahr’s Minneapolis office, has been inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL), an invitation-only organization of accomplished trial lawyers.

Matthew was inducted as part of the 2026 cohort during ACTL’s annual meeting last week in New York City.

Founded in 1950, ACTL is widely recognized as the preeminent organization of trial lawyers in North America, composed of the best of the trial bar from the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Fellowship is extended by invitation only, following a rigorous investigation process, to experienced trial lawyers who have demonstrated the highest standards of trial advocacy, ethical conduct, professionalism, civility, and collegiality. Candidates must have at least 15 years of trial experience before consideration for Fellowship.

Membership in the organization cannot exceed 1% of the total lawyer population of any state or province. ACTL strives to preserve and enhance trial practice, civility, professionalism, and the administration of justice through support of an independent judiciary, the rule of law, trial by jury, and access to justice.

Prior to joining Ballard Spahr, Matthew was an Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) in the District of Minnesota, based in Minneapolis, where he served as Chief of the Fraud and Public Corruption Section within the Criminal Division. Among numerous investigations and cases, Matthew helped lead the prosecution of the 75-defendant, $250 million Feeding Our Future fraud case—the largest pandemic-related U.S. fraud prosecution.

Prior to his service in Minnesota, Matthew served as an AUSA in the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago. As a prosecutor in the Securities & Commodities Fraud and Financial Crimes & Special Prosecution Sections of the Criminal Division, he led cases from investigation through trial, sentencing, and appeals. His experience also includes serving as a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in the Consumer Protection Branch of the DOJ’s Civil Division.

At Ballard Spahr, Matthew is a member of the Litigation Department and White Collar Defense and Investigations Practice Group, where he focuses on litigation and investigations, with an emphasis on white collar defense and securities-related cases.
