World Cup in U.S. Tempts Visitors to Wager When They Can't at Home

David L. Axelrod, a partner in Ballard Spahr's White Collar Defense and Investigations Group, spoke with Bloomberg Law about how fans traveling to the U.S. for the 2026 FIFA World Cup may be able to bet on matches when they can't at home, and how states may use this opportunity to seek a leg up in prediction market court disputes.
“I suspect that they’ll use the World Cup and this increase in interest on both regulated gambling sites and prediction markets to make the point that really this is a gambling issue that is within the states’ domain rather than the CFTC’s,” David said.
