Ballard Spahr Partner James A. Mitchell has received the Robert M. Morgenthau Award from the Police Athletic League (PAL) in recognition of his leadership in the New York City legal community.
A partner in Ballard Spahr’s Litigation Department, based in the firm’s New York office, Jim has practiced in New York for 35 years and has represented PAL for close to a decade. His work also has included many years of service on the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Panel for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. CJA Panel attorneys are appointed to represent indigent defendants in federal criminal cases—in keeping with the right to competent legal counsel as a fundamental component of the U.S. legal system. Jim and a fellow honoree were recognized at PAL’s 26th Annual Legal Professional Luncheon last week.
The award is named in memory of Robert M. Morgenthau, the longtime PAL President and Chairman who, at the time of his retirement, was the longest-serving District Attorney in New York history.
PAL works with the New York City Police Department and the broader law enforcement community to empower New York City children to achieve their full potential, offering a diverse range of recreational, educational, cultural, and social programs.
In his practice, Jim focuses on criminal and civil litigation and regulatory matters in the securities industry. His experience in criminal cases encompasses a broad range of white collar defense matters, including insider trading, antitrust, commercial bribery, medical billing fraud, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act cases, government procurement fraud, and environmental crime. Jim’s experience includes a wide spectrum of civil litigation, as well, including commercial contract disputes, defense of civil rights claims, securities fraud cases, and defense of employment claims.
Jim has been recognized by Chambers USA, The Legal 500, and The Best Lawyers in America for his white collar crime and government investigations and antitrust work.
