Securities and Commercial Litigator James Masella Joins Ballard Spahr in New York
James V. Masella III—a trial and appellate attorney with deep experience in securities litigation and commercial litigation matters—has joined Ballard Spahr’s Litigation Department and Securities Enforcement and Corporate Governance Litigation Group, firm chair Mark Stewart announced today. He will be resident in the firm’s New York office.
“Between the increased focus on enforcement and rapidly shifting market conditions, our securities litigation group is busier than ever,” Mr. Stewart said. “Jamie is a litigator who can jump in to help solve complex problems for our clients. We’re thrilled to welcome him to Ballard Spahr.”
Mr. Masella defends corporations and individuals in securities class action and derivative litigation. He advises on disputes stemming from mergers and acquisitions and regularly litigates issues arising from trusts and estates matters, including those before New York Surrogate’s Court. His recent matters have included representing an investment banking firm in a dispute arising from a de-SPAC transaction, successfully defending the majority owner of a close corporation in a corporate dissolution proceeding, working on behalf of a $140 billion private company on litigation relating to a disgraced financier, assisting the owners of one of the nation’s largest consumer products brands in matters over their late father’s estate, and representing a global investment firm in its dispute over the sale of coal mines for conversion to hydrogen manufacturing facilities intended to supply clean energy.
Mr. Masella is the latest in a series of high-profile Litigation Department arrivals to Ballard Spahr’s New York office. He follows Celia Cohen, a white collar criminal defense litigator, and Michael P. Robotti, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. Prior to joining Ballard Spahr, Mr. Masella was a partner in Patterson Belknap’s Litigation Department and headed the Corporate Litigation Group at Blank Rome.
“Ballard Spahr is highly regarded for its deep bench of talented lawyers and for the successful outcomes they have achieved for clients,” Mr. Masella said. “I’m excited to introduce my clients to my new colleagues across practice areas and to leverage my skills and experience for the benefit of the Ballard team.”
