Paul Keller Ort is a member of Ballard Spahr’s Litigation Department, where he practices complex commercial litigation. He is a former summer associate.

In his second year at Ballard, Paul tried a civil rights case to a jury verdict in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Paul played a leading role in bringing the case to trial, including drafting successful opposition briefs to two consecutive defense motions for summary judgment, and arguing a motion to exclude irrelevant and prejudicial evidence before the court. At trial, Paul conducted a direct examination and delivered closing argument.

Paul has also been to trial in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas (murder defense team pursuing the release of a former death-row inmate based on advances in forensic science) and the International Chamber of Commerce (breach of contract).

While at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, Paul served as a clinical law student at the Berkeley Law Death Penalty Clinic. His clinical work also included service at the East Bay Community Law Center, where he defended low-income tenants in unlawful detainer actions.

Paul has put out fires outside the courtroom as well. He was a Wildland Firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service for seven fire seasons, earning the title of Incident Commander and serving on a helicopter rappelling team. He helped suppress more than 60 wildfires in nine Western U.S. states.

Pro Bono Experience

Paul represents low-income tenants in Philadelphia eviction proceedings, in partnership with the Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program.
