
J. Andre Cortes is an Intellectual Property associate and registered patent attorney who focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation matters. Prior to joining Ballard Spahr, he worked at an Am Law 100 law firm, where he represented clients in complex litigation matters in federal district courts including trademark, patent, copyright, and trade secret disputes.
In this role, Andre handled all aspects of litigation, including pre-suit investigations, motion practice, discovery, depositions, and drafting appeal briefs. As part of his litigation practice, he served as “second-chair” attorney during oral arguments before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Andre has also negotiated and drafted key agreements such as settlement, licensing, and nondisclosure agreements.
While attending law school, Andre gained additional experience as a Patent Fellow at the University of Florida’s Office of Technology Licensing and as a Patent Examiner Intern at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
