Our Washington office is one of the firm's largest, offering services in a wide range of regulatory, transactional, finance, and litigation matters.
In 1978—nearly a century after its founding in Philadelphia—Ballard Spahr began its national expansion with the opening of an office in Washington, D.C. Our D.C. attorneys handle issues facing regulated industries and represent clients across the country in matters involving energy and project finance, public finance and public-private partnerships, real estate, media law, mortgage banking, consumer financial services, government relations and federal lobbying, and tax.
Our real estate practice is widely regarded as one of the best in the region. We handle a variety of commercial and residential real estate matters representing developers, private equity providers, lenders, and commercial sellers and purchasers. Housing is a particular area of strength. The firm's 2017 merger with First Amendment litigation powerhouse LSKS gave Ballard Spahr one of the largest and finest media law practices in the country. The following year, we welcomed a prominent lobbying and public policy group to the office, significantly expanding the federal capabilities of our well-known government relations practice. We were named 2020 Best Lawyers-U.S. News national Law Firm of the Year for First Amendment litigation.
Our litigators defend banks and corporations in matters involving federal and state consumer lending statutes. They also handle complex securities, UCC, civil rights, and employment litigation. Ballard Spahr's Washington, D.C. public finance team has been involved in scores of nationally prominent projects, from the expansion of public infrastructure to large-scale commercial development.
Our corporate attorneys are known for their work with investment management companies, SPACs, oil and gas funds, tax credits, and international master-feeder structures. Our mortgage banking team is based in Washington and advises clients on both the residential and commercial sides of the industry on regulatory, transactional, litigation, and enforcement matters. In the area of consumer financial services, we are noted for our strength in payment systems and Fintech transactions, regulatory compliance, product development, and cybersecurity.
