Ballard Spahr’s Fintech and Payments Industry Group and two partners in the group have been ranked as national leaders in Chambers FinTech 2022, a comprehensive guide to the leading professionals in the Fintech space.

The recently released Chambers rankings are based on months of research by an independent team that conducts hundreds of in-depth interviews with leading industry innovators and experts across the globe.

Chambers ranks Ballard Spahr Partners Kim Phan and James Kim as leading lawyers nationally in the Fintech sector. Ms. Phan, who is based in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office, earned a ranking in the category FinTech Legal: Data Protection & Cyber Security. She counsels clients on privacy and data security law and assists companies with data breach prevention and response.

“Her understanding of both the legal and the underlying technological issues draws praise from the market,” Chambers wrote in the Fintech guide.

Mr. Kim, co-leader of Ballard Spahr’s Fintech and Payments Group, earned a ranking in the category FinTech Legal: Payments & Lending. He advises Fintechs, banks, investors, and other clients on federal and state consumer financial laws and regulations, and assists clients with product development, regulatory due diligence, and other technology and lending matters. He is based in the firm’s New York office.

"I have been really impressed by his thoroughness and responsiveness in the way he approaches our problem," a client said of Mr. Kim, as quoted in Chambers FinTech 2022.

Ballard Spahr’s Fintech and Payments Group, co-led by Mr. Kim and Ronald K. Vaske, earned Chambers recognition for its nationwide strength in three categories: Fintech Legal, overall; Fintech Legal – Payments & Lending; and Fintech Legal – Data Protection & Cyber Security.

“Ballard Spahr has a strong Fintech practice covering blockchain, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence matters, among others,” Chambers states. “They regularly facilitate complex transactions in the FinTech sector, and are also held in high regard for their ability to protect clients facing regulatory scrutiny.”
