Ballard Spahr's Christine Snider Honored by Colorado Lawyers Committee

June 6, 2018

Christine Snider, a paralegal in Ballard Spahr's Denver office, was recently awarded the "Individual of the Year" from the Colorado Lawyers Committee.

The award recognizes a person who has made an outstanding contribution to Colorado's children, poor, and disadvantaged communities. Ms. Snider was selected because of her extensive pro bono work for the Committee's Hate Crimes Education Task Force.

The Task Force, which was formed in 1993, presents trials to students based on a fictional case arising from a violation of Colorado Hate/Bias-Motivated Crimes Statute. At the conclusion of the trial, small groups of students become "juries" to discuss the issues presented and, with the assistance of an adult facilitator, reach a verdict. The students become very engaged in discussing diversity in their community and ways to prevent the spread of racial slurs and hateful actions.

Since 2014, Ms. Snider has managed the facilitation of volunteers and schools for the program, including fielding requests from groups wishing to participate and ensuring that each presentation is equipped with sufficient volunteers. In recent years, the Task Force has steadily grown in size, with volunteers from the Department of Justice and the Committee's Young Lawyers Division taking part in the mock trials. In the past three years, Ms. Snider has donated a total of 330 hours pro bono to the program.
