Ballard Spahr's Paul Thissen Named to Minnesota Supreme Court

April 17, 2018

Paul Thissen—an experienced health law attorney and  member of the Minnesota House of Representatives—has been appointed to the Minnesota Supreme Court by Governor Mark Dayton. Mr. Thissen will fill the vacancy left by Justice David Stras, who recently was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

"I am humbled by this appointment and promise to work hard to ensure Minnesota’s justice system better sees, hears, and works for all people in our state," said Mr. Thissen.

At Ballard Spahr, Mr. Thissen focuses on health care regulatory matters and advising institutional and financial clients on issues involving long-term care and disability services. He has been a Minnesota state representative since 2003 and previously served as the Speaker of the House and Chair of the Health and Human Services Policy and Oversight Committee.

Mr. Thissen is committed to providing pro bono services, serving on the Minnesota Justice Foundation’s Board of Directors and founding the Access for Persons with Disabilities Program. He also is active in several community organizations.

"We were delighted to learn that Paul has been selected for the state's highest court," said Peter Michaud, Managing Partner of Ballard Spahr's Minneapolis office." Paul is a trusted colleague, a tireless advocate for clients, and a dedicated public servant. I have no doubt that he will continue to serve the state of Minnesota and its justice system with the utmost integrity."
