April 4, 2022

Michael R. Guerrero—a consumer financial services attorney with more than a decade of experience advising clients on compliance with state and federal consumer protection laws—has rejoined Ballard Spahr as a partner in the firm’s Los Angeles office, firm Chair Mark Stewart announced today.

Mr. Guerrero, a member of the firm’s Consumer Financial Services Group, advises companies across industries on consumer protection and consumer financial services issues, including point-of-sale and personal property financing and leasing, rent-to-own products, and installment loans. He assists clients in navigating compliance with state and federal calling and telemarketing, retail installment sales, lending, and payments laws. He has advised banks, professional sports teams, Fintech companies, retailers, and automotive finance companies.

“Mike is an experienced and well-respected consumer financial services attorney with a strong, broad command of state and federal consumer protection laws and industry knowledge that will help clients navigate obstacles and stay ahead of the competition,” said Dan McKenna, who leads Ballard Spahr’s CFS Group alongside John Socknat. “Mike’s skill and perspective will be much appreciated by financial services providers facing an increase in regulation, both by states and a reinvigorated Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He also brings experience advising clients on California laws and regulations and will be a critical part of the continued expansion of our Group in the West.”

Mr. Guerrero is the fourth attorney to join Ballard Spahr’s Consumer Financial Services Group in the past three weeks, following the March 21 arrival of Lisa Lanham and Rinaldo Martinez and the March 28 arrival of Michael Gordon. The group, which has more than 75 lawyers nationwide, advises on regulatory matters, assists in the design and documentation of credit products, and represents clients in class actions, government regulatory enforcement proceedings, and other lawsuits nationwide. It is nationally top-ranked by leading legal industry publications, including Chambers USA and U.S. News and World Report.

Prior to joining Ballard Spahr, Mr. Guerrero worked in private practice and held in-house positions, including at an e-commerce retail installment sales company, a mortgage lender, and a publicly traded debt buyer. While in-house, he oversaw legal and compliance efforts associated with the launch of a national payroll deduction payment-based retail installment sale product; obtained and renewed hundreds of debt collection, debt purchasing, retail installment seller, sales finance, and mortgage lending licenses; liaised with state regulators; and oversaw regulatory examinations. He was previously an associate at Ballard Spahr.

“Ballard has a deep bench of financial industry talent and has built the top consumer financial services practice in the country,” Mr. Guerrero said. “I’m thrilled to be rejoining this accomplished, collaborative team, reconnecting with colleagues I admire and trust, and working with them to find solutions for our clients.”
