Why We Should Celebrate Rather Than Fear the Rule Change on Cameras in Courts

Minnesota recently joined a majority of other states in expanding camera access to its courtrooms. Leita Walker, a First Amendment attorney who supported media organizations in seeking the change, wrote about why this should be seen as a welcome development.

"Perhaps this access will inspire trust and confidence in that system, as seemed to happen when, due to the exigencies of the pandemic, 23 million Americans watched the livestream of Derek Chauvin’s trial for the murder of George Floyd," she wrote. "Or perhaps it will lead to disappointment in the system and galvanize efforts to improve it. Time will tell, but letting people see what their government is up to is rarely a bad thing."
