City year

Ballard Spahr sponsors a group of young adults who volunteer with City Year in Philadelphia. City Year is a nonprofit organization focused on fighting the national dropout crisis. Its volunteers are recent college graduates who spend one year teaching in the city’s poorest and most underserved schools. Through its partnership with City Year, the firm organizes activities outside the classroom, with attorneys and staff participating, to enrich the volunteers’ experience. This year’s volunteer team is assigned to Morton McMichael School and includes several aspiring teachers and social workers.

In November 2013, the firm’s City Year team met with retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor to discuss the importance of a civics education and ways to help young people become more active, engaged citizens. Justice O’Connor founded iCivics, a nonprofit organization that provides free, interactive civics education resources to schools.
