Securities enforcement and litigation attorney Ivan Knauer has joined Ballard Spahr as Of Counsel in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office.

Mr. Knauer represents public companies, broker-dealers, investment companies, and individuals in enforcement investigations and litigation across the country. He represents clients in enforcement matters brought by a variety of state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and the Department of Justice (DOJ). He also represents clients in securities class action lawsuits and arbitrations.

A former enforcement attorney at FINRA and the SEC, Mr. Knauer also advises financial institutions on regulatory compliance matters and has extensive experience with SEC receiverships and bankruptcy matters. He regularly conducts internal investigations stemming from litigation and/or government enforcement.

“Ivan’s extensive securities experience—both as a defense lawyer and an enforcement attorney with the SEC and FINRA—makes him a valuable asset to our clients,” said David L. Axelrod, a former SEC supervisory trial counsel who serves as Co-Practice Leader of Ballard Spahr’s Securities Enforcement and Corporate Governance Litigation Group. “He also expands our firm’s securities enforcement and litigation capabilities to our growing Washington, D.C., office.”

Mr. Knauer will be a member of the firm’s Securities Enforcement and Corporate Governance Litigation Group. He joins a nationally recognized team of litigators who represent companies and individuals faced with private actions and government investigations, enforcement, and administrative proceedings. The Group’s members represent some of the nation’s most prominent businesses, and include numerous attorneys who, like Mr. Knauer and Mr. Axelrod, have prior experience as lawyers for government regulatory agencies.
