Elizabeth Seidlin-Bernstein, a litigator dedicated to defending the rights of a free press, has been named to the Philadelphia Business Journal's 40 Under 40 list.

The list recognizes 40 Philadelphia-area professionals under age 40 who demonstrate outstanding leadership in business and exceptional commitment to their communities. Winners will be profiled in the publication's special awards supplement and recognized at a dinner on May 30.

Ms. Seidlin-Bernstein focuses on representing news, entertainment, and other media clients, including defending them in defamation, privacy, and intellectual property litigation, responding to subpoenas for newsgathering materials and confidential source information, and seeking press and public access to government records and proceedings.

Ms. Seidlin-Bernstein has played a key role in several high-profile cases defending the First Amendment rights of the media as well as ordinary citizens. She also counsels an array of media around the country about their newsgathering, reporting, and programming and helps them safeguard their intellectual property.

"I'm humbled to be recognized by the Business Journal along with such a distinguished group of honorees," said Ms. Seidlin-Bernstein. "I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to devote every day to work I believe in deeply: defending the fundamental rights of the press."

In addition to her legal work, Ms. Seidlin-Bernstein is regularly asked to speak about issues affecting the press. Last year, she spoke at the Pennsylvania Bar Institute's Annual Internet Defamation Seminar on the "Basics of Internet Defamation Law" and at the New York State Bar Association's Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Section Spring Meeting on recent developments in the right of publicity. Last fall, Ms. Seidlin-Bernstein spoke on a panel on "The Constitution of Liberty" at the Arthur Garfield Hays Civil Liberties Program 60th Anniversary Celebration at New York University School of Law.

"Lizzie is an emerging leader at our firm and in the media law bar. It's gratifying to see her recognized," Ballard Spahr Partner Michael Berry said. "She's a talented litigator and trusted adviser. Clients and colleagues value her sharp insight, keen understanding of the media business, and unwavering dedication to the First Amendment."
