Ballard Spahr's Daniel McKenna Elected as Fellow of the American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers

April 16, 2018

Daniel JT McKenna, a member Ballard Spahr's Consumer Financial Services Group, has been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers (ACCFSL).
The induction of Mr. McKenna, who is based in the firm's Philadelphia office, brings to 11 the number of Ballard Spahr Fellows of the College, among the highest number of any firm in the country. The induction ceremony was held in Orlando over the weekend.

Founded in 1996, ACCFSL is a professional association of lawyers experienced in handling consumer financial services matters and dedicated to the improvement and enhancement of the practice of consumer financial services law and professional ethics. Invitation is by membership only, and is limited to those lawyers whose principal practice is in the field of consumer financial services law, and who have achieved preeminence in the field.

"I'm honored to be elected to the College and to join this acclaimed group of consumer financial services attorneys," said Mr. McKenna. "I look forward to working with my colleagues to carry out the College's mission of making our profession the very best it can be."

Mr. McKenna's consumer financial services practice focuses on compliance counseling as well as individual and class litigation and arbitration in mortgage, credit card, debt-collection, auto loan, and servicing matters. His clients include banks and nonbank lenders, mortgage lenders and servicers, third-party service providers, auto lenders, and repossession companies. He regularly represents these clients in claims brought under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, Truth in Lending Act, Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, and other consumer-protection laws.

Mr. McKenna is also noted for his pro bono activities, serving as President of the national Wills for Heroes Foundation, a program that provides pro bono estate-planning services for first responders, emergency personnel, military service members, and veterans. He was honored in 2013 with American Inns of Court's Sandra Day O'Connor Award for Professional Service for his work with Wills for Heroes.

"Dan is a highly accomplished litigator with a reputation for excellence and a track record to match," said Alan S. Kaplinsky, who leads Ballard Spahr's Consumer Financial Services Group. Mr. Kaplinsky, who served as the College's first President, was honored in 2016 with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

"This is a well-deserved recognition," he said, "and I’m proud to join my esteemed colleagues in welcoming Dan to the organization."

Ballard Spahr's Consumer Financial Services Group, founded in 1995, comprises more than 125 attorneys nationwide. The Group is nationally recognized for its guidance in structuring and documenting new consumer financial services products, its experience with the full range of federal and state consumer credit laws, and its skill in litigation defense and avoidance, including pioneering work in pre-dispute arbitration programs.
