Han C. Choi, a prominent public finance lawyer and the former Managing Partner of Ballard Spahr's Atlanta office, was honored recently by the American Korean Friendship Society (AKFS), the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), and the Georgia Asian Pacific American Bar Association (GAPABA).

As leader of Ballard Spahr’s Korea Initiative, Mr. Choi helps Korean multi-national companies navigate the American regulatory and legal system. He specializes in Korean company investment in the United States, assisting with economic development incentives, financing, and startup operations. As a partner in the firm’s Public Finance Department, he has handled bond transactions that have paved the way for airports, sports stadiums, manufacturing facilities, transportation centers, infrastructure systems, and schools. Mr. Choi is a former special assistant for health and human services to then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton.

Said Ballard Spahr Chair Mark Stewart: “Han has made a difference in the lives of so many people—in Atlanta, in the Korean American community, and here at the firm, where his leadership was roundly admired and his work was held up as an example of skill and dedication to clients. He is an asset to every organization he joins and a friend to everyone who meets him.”

Mr. Choi received the AKFS Lifetime Achievement Award last week. The award recognizes his many contributions to the Korean-American community. At the ceremony, AKFS played a video tribute, highlighting his career and community involvement, and included testimonials from Korean-American lawyers who have benefited from Mr. Choi's kindness, mentoring, and leadership.

The night before, Mr. Choi was honored, also with a video tribute, by GAPABA at its Annual Lunar New Year Banquet and Board Installation, with the inauguration of the Han C. Choi Mentor Award. The award will recognize members of the legal profession who continue Mr. Choi's tradition of remarkable mentorship of the next generation of Asian Pacific American attorneys.

Mr. Choi has long been active in the Asian Pacific American and Korean American business and legal communities, especially through bar associations. He was an At-Large Member of NAPABA's Board of Governors, chaired its 2011 Convention Host Committee, and is a recipient of the organization's Trailblazer award. Mr. Choi served as President of GAPABA, which honored him with its Pioneer Award. In addition, he is a board member of the Korean American Bar Association of Georgia, which he helped to found in 2012.

The NAPABA Law Foundation—in partnership with the Choi Family—recently announced the creation of the Han C. Choi Scholarship, "to honor a NAPABA Trailblazer, mentor, and leader, who embodies grit and courage in the face of great adversity." The foundation hopes to raise $100,000 for the Scholarship Fund, which will be awarded to a deserving Asian Pacific American first or second year law student who exhibits academic excellence, leadership, volunteerism, mentorship experience, and a demonstrated interest in Asian Pacific American issues. Special consideration will be given to candidates who have been affected by cancer, as a survivor or family member.
