Ballard Spahr LLP has added an attorney to its Washington, D.C., office who most recently served as vice president and in-house counsel for Boston Properties Inc., and brings more than 25 years of experience counseling on a broad array of real estate transactions.

Keli Colby joined the firm on June 15 as of counsel, after a 15-year stint with Boston Properties, a publicly traded real estate investment trust that has a national portfolio of office buildings and other properties that totals around 47.7 million square feet of space. Her work for the company included acquisitions and dispositions, finance transactions, joint venture formations and complex restructurings. It also entailed work on leasings, construction and property management issues, as well as the oversight of litigation and outside counsel.

In addition to the helping Boston Properties navigate a diverse legal environment, Colby was also tasked with advising the company’s executives and other personnel on transactions, business objectives and management and operational issues.

Bart I. Mellits, chairman of Ballard Spahr's real estate department, said that this exposure will give Colby a leg up in her new role. "Keli's in-house experience provides her with an invaluable perspective in understanding and being able to respond to the demands of today’s market, where clients are increasingly focused on value-added legal services," Mellits said in a statement."She is an accomplished lawyer and business executive who can analyze and address challenges through the lens of the client’s business team."

Colby said that her experience working in-house for Boston Properties allowed her to gain a firm understanding of how business decisions are made, including the financial modeling and analysis they’re based on. She said that enables her to better identify issues that might be important on a particular transaction, and provide better advice overall.
