Ballard Spahr is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the law firm's New Jersey office by partnering with LUCY (Lifting Up Camden’s Youth) Outreach, a nonprofit youth services organization, for higher education scholarships, a mentorship program, and community service projects.

Based in Camden, one of the nation's poorest cities, LUCY Outreach provides educational, social, spiritual, and service-oriented programming to low-income Camden County residents ages 12 to 25 and their families. Ballard Spahr kick-started the partnership by funding two academic scholarships awarded at LUCY's annual dinner dance on April 28. The firm also served as a major sponsor for the event, and Ballard Spahr lawyers attended to celebrate and support the scholarships recipients, LUCY participants Angel Santana and Trisha Trinidad, as they were awarded $2,000 each toward college or other higher education program. Angel and Trisha were selected based on their exemplary academic achievement and extracurricular activities as well as an essay and other submitted materials. Ballard Spahr also awarded them each a brand new laptop computer to facilitate their education as they pursue the next phase.

"LUCY Outreach does great things for young people," said John B. Kearney, Managing Partner of Ballard Spahr's New Jersey office. "The organization gives kids a safe place to go, tutoring and other academic help, confidence to look to college, and help with college applications. Ballard Spahr is honored to connect with our community through LUCY and support the organization's great work with terrific kids. We can think of no more meaningful way to celebrate a quarter century in New Jersey."

Pro bono and community service are Ballard Spahr hallmarks—New Jersey lawyers and staff have been active in supporting community-based organizations and causes since the firm established an office in the Garden State in 1992. The partnership with LUCY provides the firm a way to expose young people to opportunities in the legal profession, as lawyers and also in ancillary occupations available in the multibillion-dollar legal industry, such as finance and accounting, human resource management, marketing, and technology.

LUCY Outreach designs its programs to address all environmental systems that have an impact on teenagers and young adults, including school, home life, peers, and neighborhood environment—from homework help, leadership training, and college visits to community service such as neighborhood cleanups to management of time, money, and stress. Offering multilingual, culturally sensitive services, LUCY empowers young people to form healthy relationships, make good choices, and develop into compassionate and socially responsible adults who make a positive difference in their community.

"It's huge for our kids to see involvement and commitment from a major firm like Ballard, especially one that has a strong presence in South Jersey, where our young people are from," said Joseph Kadlec, Chair of the LUCY Board of Trustees.

"This partnership is also an affirmation of our important role in the community, and motivation for others to get involved," said Kristin Prinn, LUCY Outreach Executive Director and founder. "A relationship like this is a game-changer for us, and gives us opportunities to show off the great work we're doing."
