Ballard Spahr has embarked on a partnership with CO+HOOTS, a world-renowned coworking space in Phoenix for aspiring entrepreneurs and startups, in what is believed to be one of the first collaborations of its kind in the country with a law firm.

Ballard Spahr provides free, monthly, one-on-one consultation to CO+HOOTS members on legal topics related to business and technology, such as intellectual property, non-compete agreements, independent contractor agreements, and others. Since earlier this year, attorneys from the firm’s Phoenix office, including Partner Travis J. Leach and Associates Jonathon A. Talcott, Laura C. Brooks, Wesley R. Robinson, and Lauren E. McKeon, have conducted multiple legal advisement sessions and educational training sessions at CO+HOOTS.

The relationship has yielded impressive results, CO+HOOTS founder Jenny Poon said.

“Ballard Spahr has created so much impact in our community and helped over a hundred entrepreneurs with their consultation on legal issues,” said Ms. Poon. “From small businesses to fast-moving tech companies, Ballard Spahr has been a vital part of creating growth for startups related to a variety of topics—trademarks, investment, contracts, pitch decks, and others. We couldn't be more grateful to have such a great team fighting for the success of these companies.”

According to Mr. Leach, a partner in the Phoenix office and co-leader of the firm’s Emerging Growth and Private Capital Group, the Ballard Spahr and CO+HOOTS partnership was born from a shared commitment to helping Phoenix’s entrepreneurial community.

“Ballard Spahr is focused on helping to grow and integrate the national startup community. This effort is two-fold. First, working with our fund clients to target and execute on the many opportunities in the growth space and second, to assist entrepreneurs and growth companies to put their businesses in a position for a successful future,” he said. “The CO+HOOTS partnership has been a great fit for us to accomplish these goals and it’s gratifying to be able to work with such a fantastic organization.”

Michael Zimmerlich, a crowdfunding adviser and President of 80/20 Records, said of his experience with Ballard Spahr at CO+HOOTS: “Meeting with Ballard Spahr was incredibly useful in answering the questions I had. Instead of scouring the internet for information that may not be correct for what I need, I got advice from professionals who were friendly and informative.”

Teaming with CO+HOOTS also supports the goals of the firm’s Project SING—seeding, incubating, nurturing, and growing young companies—so they can transform business concepts into thriving middle-market or public companies. Project SING is part of the firm’s commitment to helping emerging growth companies and startups, which also includes the Ballard Academy for Student Entrepreneurs (BASE), one of the few incubators in the country created by a law firm for student startup founders.

“There is great entrepreneurial momentum in the West and across the country,” said Mr. Leach. “We are committed to linking investors with innovators to structure deals that can jump-start businesses and lead to the continued growth of companies in a variety of industries ranging from technology to sports.”

The first legal advisement session at CO+HOOTS for 2017, set for January 19, is sold out. For more information about CO+HOOTS and other future events, please visit www.cohoots.com.
