Andrea M. Mattei, a commercial finance and real estate attorney concentrating in the hotel and resort industry with more than a decade of experience as in-house counsel for major resort and hotel brands, has joined Ballard Spahr as of counsel in the firm’s Baltimore office, firm Chair Mark Stewart announced today.

Ms. Mattei’s arrival adds further depth to Ballard Spahr’s nationally recognized Resort, Hospitality, and Timeshare practice. She joins the firm with senior executive experience at two of the world's leading hospitality companies, most recently Wyndham Worldwide Corporation, where she served as Group Vice President-Legal for Strategic Development, Strategic Sourcing, and Corporate Real Estate, and Marriott International, Inc., where she served as Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel, Finance, Corporate Governance and Mergers and Acquisitions. Ms. Mattei also worked in private practice with major law firms in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, as well as serving as the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel to one of the nation’s largest mortgage-servicing and asset-management companies.

Her wide-ranging experience and firsthand hospitality industry knowledge strategically position Ms. Mattei to analyze issues and advise hotel and resort clients on transactional, financial, and operational matters. She holds bar admissions in Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, and New York.

“Andrea’s years of experience working on the front lines with the biggest players in the resort and hotel industry give her tremendous insight into the needs of clients in this sector,” said Christopher Payne, who leads Ballard Spahr’s Resort, Hospitality, and Timeshare Group. “She is a terrific lawyer with in-depth knowledge and a thoughtful approach that will help position clients to capitalize on opportunities and meet challenges in this dynamic industry.”

Ms. Mattei’s practice focuses on the structuring and financing of a broad range of hospitality assets and mixed-use projects. She advises on hotel portfolio assembly, acquisition, disposition, construction, site management, procurement, design, and day-to-day hospitality operations. She also brings a strong background in corporate debt and equity, accounting, and finance, as well as SEC reporting, investor relations, and subsidiary management.

Ballard Spahr’s Resort and Hotel Group has represented hospitality clients, including some of the industry’s largest companies, for more than 30 years. Its attorneys advise on all aspects of hotel, resort, and timeshare development and operations across the United States and internationally. The group counsels hospitality companies, owners, developers, operators, lenders, asset managers, franchisers, and franchisees. The group also advises on the development and implementation of private residence clubs, vacation ownership, and other recreational membership plans, including many innovative, first-to-market products.

“Our Resort and Hotel practice is among the finest in the country. Andrea makes it even stronger, particularly in the important Baltimore-Washington corridor,” said Bart I. Mellits, Chair of the firm’s Real Estate Department. “Many of our lawyers have worked with Andrea while she was both in private practice and in-house and they have great respect for her professional ability. We are thrilled to have her at the firm.”

Hospitality and resort projects often involve legal issues on multiple fronts, and lawyers in Ballard Spahr’s Resort, Hospitality, and Timeshare Group can draw on the experience of colleagues who focus on issues such as zoning and land use, labor and employment, intellectual property, food and beverage, environmental assessment and remediation, tax planning, public-private partnerships, gaming, and compliance.

“My experience working with the capital markets and business units at large hotel and resort companies fits well at Ballard Spahr, which is a dynamic leader in resort and hotel law,” Ms. Mattei said. “I am excited to join a strong, well-rounded team.”
