Dee Spagnuolo, a partner in Ballard Spahr’s Litigation Department and White Collar Defense/Internal Investigations Group, has been named a Diverse Attorney of the Year by The Legal Intelligencer.

Ms. Spagnuolo is one of 23 attorneys selected by The Legal Intelligencer’s editorial staff. The list, published every other year, recognizes minority lawyers with outstanding professional accomplishments.

Ms. Spagnuolo represents companies, educational institutions, and individuals in complex civil litigation, internal investigations, and compliance and regulatory matters. She also counsels clients in the development and implementation of diversity and inclusion programs with a focus on Dodd-Frank Act requirements. In recent years, she has worked on two of the firm’s most high-profile matters—an internal investigation for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia of alleged sexual misconduct by priests and representation of NASDAQ during a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into the Facebook IPO.

Ms. Spagnuolo’s commitment to LGBTQ equality is extensive. She is a member of Ballard Spahr’s Diversity and Inclusion Council, which works to recruit and retain diverse lawyers, and of Equality Ballard, an affinity group for LGBTQ attorneys.

Ms. Spagnuolo regularly handles pro bono cases. She counsels nonprofit organizations with respect to their policies and procedures surrounding mandatory reporting of suspected child abuse and background checks for employees and volunteers. She has also represented clients in proceedings under the Violence Against Women Act.

Ms. Spagnuolo is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School and Bowdoin College. Prior to joining Ballard Spahr, she served as a law clerk to the Hon. R. Barclay Surrick on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
