Thomas W. Hazlett, a commercial litigator with more than a decade of experience representing clients in toxic tort/product liability, antitrust, intellectual property, and financial services disputes, has joined Ballard Spahr as of counsel in Philadelphia, firm Chair Mark Stewart announced today.

Mr. Hazlett has tried several cases to verdict, including multiple jury trials. He has handled appeals in state and federal courts, including arguments in the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and litigated motions for injunctive relief that included full evidentiary hearings. He will be a member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation Group.

“Tom brings valuable experience in several key practice areas for the firm – antitrust, product liability, and intellectual property litigation,” said John B. Langel, Chair of Ballard Spahr’s Litigation Department. “He is an outstanding lawyer whose professional goals align perfectly with our strengths as a firm. We’re happy to have him on the team.”

Mr. Hazlett advises on antitrust and Robinson-Patman Act price discrimination issues, conducts insurance coverage analysis, and develops regulatory compliance and risk mitigation strategies. He also served as lead trial counsel for a national bank in breach of fiduciary duty and breach of contract bench trials alleging millions in damages.

In addition, Mr. Hazlett managed eDiscovery teams in cases involving the False Claims Act, toxic tort cases, commercial disputes, antitrust class actions, and civil RICO actions. He joins Ballard Spahr from Schnader Harrison, where he was a partner.

“Ballard Spahr has the national platform I need to expand my practice and the broad array of services my clients are looking for, particularly in the transactional area,” said Mr. Hazlett. “The legal teams at Ballard regularly handle matters of significant size and complexity. It was a good fit and I can’t wait to get started.”

With more than 200 attorneys in 14 offices nationwide, Ballard Spahr’s Litigation Department is the firm’s largest. Its litigators represent clients in cases ranging from securities class actions and contractual disputes to patent infringement matters and federal and state appeals. The firm has been recognized as a leading law firm for litigation for the past decade by Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business.
