Ballard Spahr partner Harry Weiss was recognized by former Maryland Governor Martin J. O’Malley for his service on the Marcellus Shale Safe Drilling Initiative Advisory Commission.

The 13-member Commission was created to examine the possibility of safe extraction of natural gas from the Marcellus Shale. It studied the possible effects that extraction could have on public health, safety, and the environment. Mr. Weiss served on the Commission, which issued its final report in 2014, for three years.

"I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served on this commission," said Mr. Weiss. "And I hope our findings help to guide the development of safe drilling in Maryland and across the country."

Based in the firm’s Philadelphia office, Mr. Weiss is a partner in Ballard Spahr’s Environment and Natural Resources Group. He focuses on issues arising out of oil and gas development in Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland, and has written and spoken on natural gas exploration issues at industry and trade association conferences. Before entering law school, Mr. Weiss was general manager of Lakewood Oil Company, Inc., in Honesdale, Pennsylvania.
