LOS ANGELES – Peter L. Haviland, an accomplished civil trial lawyer based in Los Angeles who has tried cases in state, federal, and bankruptcy courts throughout the country and has argued a wide range of appeals, has been named to Savoy Magazine’s list of “Most Influential Black Lawyers for 2015.”

The magazine’s prestigious showcase includes a cross section of lawyers—mainly partners from The Am Law 200 list and corporate counsel for Fortune 1000 companies—who represent a diverse range of experience but have a national or global focus. The selection committee includes judges, corporate counsel, and law professors.

“When Peter joined Ballard a year ago, we knew we had gained a top litigator with impressive credentials and a background of service to others,” said firm Chair Mark Stewart. “Peter is highly regarded by his clients and peers, and we are thrilled that he is being duly recognized for his achievements.”
Mr. Haviland’s national and international practice includes high-stakes trials and appeals for product liability and commercial litigation matters for companies including DuPont and ExxonMobil.

“I am honored to be included in this group of extraordinary lawyers,” Mr. Haviland said. “I am also grateful to count a number of those named as friends. The challenge remains: How do those of us with these positions work more effectively together to desegregate the major law firms and the corporate executive suites?”

In addition to his trial work, Mr. Haviland has extensive experience in entertainment and media industry litigation, and has served as outside general counsel for several recorded music companies. His pro bono efforts include the prosecution of domestic violence and other criminal matters for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.

“Recognizing the Most Influential Black Lawyers is a natural extension of our ongoing coverage of influencers and achievers that began with the creation of the Most Influential Black Executives and Most Influential Black Women listings,” said L.P. Green, II, Publisher of Savoy Magazine. “We remain committed to recognizing and exposing the world to the full spectrum of excellence within the African American community.”

In addition to inclusion on the Savoy Magazine list, Mr. Haviland previously was named one of "America’s Top Black Lawyers" by Black Enterprise Magazine. He has served in a number of professional and service organizations, including the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association, the Constitutional Rights Foundation, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
