David J. Bodney, a nationally recognized First Amendment litigator who leads Ballard Spahr's Media Law Group, has been selected as one of the 2014 Leaders of the Year in Public Policy by the Arizona Capitol Times. Mr. Bodney was chosen in Open Government, one of 19 categories in which leaders are identified for their contributions to public policy in Arizona. The award recipients will be honored on September 16 at an event at the Phoenician in Phoenix.

Mr. Bodney, who focuses on media and constitutional law and has defended print, broadcast, and electronic media in defamation, privacy, and related First Amendment litigation, recently was named to a two-year term as Chair of the American Bar Association’s Forum on Communications Law. This group includes nearly 2,200 lawyers in print, broadcast, online, and mobile media and the telecommunications industries. He also has been recognized every year from 1995 to 2015 by The Best Lawyers in America in the categories of advertising law and First Amendment litigation.

Mr. Bodney has worked to secure open government legislation on behalf of the publishing industry for more than 30 years. In 1999, together with The Arizona Republic, he earned the Arizona Newspapers Association's Freedom of Information Award for his work in federal court on behalf of Phoenix Newspapers, Inc. His practice covers a range of constitutional law issues, including prosecuting actions to secure open government, blocking prior restraints and subpoenas of reporters by government and third parties, and handling advertising, commercial speech, intellectual property law, and voting rights issues.
