Gregory L. Seltzer, a Ballard Spahr business and finance partner who focuses on mergers and acquisitions, has been named by The M&A Advisor as one of the winners of its 5th Annual 40 Under 40 Recognition Awards. This year, Mr. Seltzer advised the City of Philadelphia and the Mayor in the historic $1.86 billion sale of Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW), the largest city-owned utility in the United States, to UIL Holdings Corporation.

The awards program recognizes the professional accomplishments and contributions of emerging leaders of the M&A, financing, and turnaround industries from around the country. Winners were selected by an independent judging panel of prominent business leaders. Mr. Seltzer is being recognized in the Legal Advisor category and is the only Philadelphia-based attorney on the list. He will be honored at an awards gala in New York on June 24 in conjunction with The M&A Advisor’s 2014 Emerging Leaders Summit.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with a number of high-profile clients nationwide on complex, high-stakes transactions at Ballard Spahr,” Mr. Seltzer said. “The 40 Under 40 Legal Advisor category includes numerous attorneys who have distinguished themselves in their M&A work, and I’m honored to be among them.”

Mr. Seltzer represents both public and private companies in his national M&A practice. The sale of PGW is the largest transaction conducted by the City, and it is expected to provide the City between $424 million and $631 million in net proceeds to shore up its pension fund. In addition, he has handled a multitude of transactional matters in the sports industry, including Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League.

Mr. Seltzer was named an “Associate to Watch” in corporate/M&A and private equity law in the 2013 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business and became a partner at Ballard Spahr in July 2013.
