Bill Curran, a Ballard Spahr lawyer and Managing Partner of the firm’s Las Vegas office, will receive the Silver Staircase Honor tonight from the Public Interest Law Association (PILA) at the University of Nevada’s William S. Boyd School of Law. The award recognizes excellence in public interest work. Mr. Curran was selected because his commitment to pro bono work demonstrates to law students that they can be successful working in for-profit law firms while remaining committed to community service.

PILA is a student-run nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of public interest work and promoting public interest opportunities available to law students. It hosts an annual fundraiser for students undertaking unpaid or low-paying public interest work. The money raised supports law students who devote their summers to resolving landlord-tenant conflicts, helping senior citizens obtain housing, settling child custody and divorce disputes, and securing equal and civil rights for individuals.

“I’ve always had an interest in public service, so I have made it a priority to incorporate it into my career through pro bono work,” said Mr. Curran. “I hope that I can serve as an example to young lawyers and show that it is possible to balance private law practice with legal work that serves the public interest.”

Mr. Curran devotes hundreds of hours a year to pro bono work, ranging from advocacy for abused and neglected children to real estate advice. He recently represented an elderly widow facing numerous housing-code violations and fines and helped her negotiate a settlement to save her home.

Mr. Curran concentrates his practice on administrative and government law, particularly in the areas of real estate development, land use/zoning, and gaming law. He is former President of the State Bar of Nevada and Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission. He currently serves on the board of directors of four nonprofit organizations and is the President of Nevada Legal Services, a statewide provider of legal services to the indigent.
