Olabisi “Bisi” Ladeji Okubadejo, a higher education attorney focusing on civil rights and employment issues, has joined Ballard Spahr as of counsel in Baltimore, firm Chair Mark Stewart announced today.

Ms. Okubadejo has experience as an attorney in both private practice and with the federal government. As Supervisory General Attorney in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, she oversaw the attorneys and equal opportunity specialists who investigate discrimination complaints against educational institutions. Ms. Okubadejo is particularly known for her skill in handling matters involving allegations of discrimination on the basis of race, disability, and sex, including sexual harassment and sexual violence.

“Educational institutions, from public and private primary schools through post-graduate university programs, face an increasingly complex number of regulations governing claims of misconduct. Prevention is critically important and responding to investigations is not work for a generalist,” said Daniel V. Johns, who leads the firm’s Higher Education Group. “Bisi’s skill as a private practice litigator, coupled with her impressive federal government experience in this specific area of law, makes her a valuable asset to our clients. We are thrilled to welcome her to the firm.”

As a member of Ballard Spahr’s Litigation Department and Higher Education, Labor and Employment, and White Collar Defense/Internal Investigations Groups, Ms. Okubadejo will advise educational institutions on compliance with federal laws such as Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Title IX, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Age Discrimination Act.

“The range of Ballard Spahr’s higher education capabilities and its deep client base make the firm a terrific fit for me and my particular area of practice,” Ms. Okubadejo said. “I look forward to contributing to the continued growth of the practice nationwide and to working with my distinguished new colleagues.”

Ballard Spahr’s Higher Education Group counsels colleges and universities nationwide on issues ranging from labor relations and real estate development to complex financing issues and the protection of intellectual property. The team is made up of attorneys from practices throughout the firm working together to address the many needs of the higher education sector.

“Since Ballard opened the Baltimore office a decade ago, we’ve been consistently growing our depth of talent and expanding into areas of law that are strategic priorities for the firm,” said Jon M. Laria, Managing Partner of Ballard Spahr’s Baltimore office. “We are fortunate to work with premier colleges and universities both across the nation and within the Washington/Baltimore corridor. Bisi will make the group—and our office—even stronger.”
