Ballard Spahr has moved its Washington, D.C., office to the Millennium Building, the city’s first commercial office building to receive LEED-EB certification.

The 50 attorneys in Ballard Spahr’s Washington office handle finance, regulatory, and litigation matters, with emphases on energy and project finance, mortgage banking, real estate, housing, public finance and public-private partnerships, and tax. The opening of the Washington office in 1978 marked the beginning of the firm’s expansion into a national firm that now has 13 offices throughout the country.

“This has been an exciting time for us,” said Joseph A. Fanone, Managing Partner of the Washington office. “We recently brought on board an impressive group of mortgage banking lawyers who are leading our efforts nationally in a rapidly changing area of law. The multifamily housing practice is experiencing an incredible volume of loan activity. Our energy practice is expanding its work in response to the tremendous changes we are seeing in that area. And our public finance lawyers are responding to the renewed emphasis on infrastructure.”

Mr. Fanone said Ballard Spahr has maintained its strength despite a contracting economy because the firm has responded to new opportunities by shifting focus. “Our distressed real estate initiative is a good example of adapting our existing strengths to the changing times,” Mr. Fanone said.
