From crippled computer networks to discrimination claims, the annual tradition of the NCAA Men's Division One basketball tournament can pose a host of legal and productivity pitfalls for businesses. Ballard Spahr Labor and Employment Partner Steven Suflas shares a true story of March Madness gone awry and what employers can learn from a tournament superfan who crashed his company's connection.

While some employers in more relaxed environments might sponsor a bracket pool or screen the games in the break room, this company had a "we gotta get stuff out the door and we gotta get it out in a hurry" mentality, so it sent the bandwidth hog packing, said Suflas.

Suflas says employers can avoid this problem by "implementing a few safeguards" such as having their information technology departments blacklist the main streaming sites.
