Urging the U.S. government not to "break with this Nation's long and proud tradition of providing safe refuge to journalists, authors and commentators who criticize corrupt government officials," the National Press Club, its nonprofit Journalism Institute and 15 other professional journalism organizations on Monday filed a friend-of-the-court brief before the Board of Immigration Appeals in support Emilio Gutiérrez-Soto's asylum case.

The brief was authored pro bono by First Amendment attorneys Charles Tobin, Steven Zansberg and Mark Flores. Tobin, a Press Club member, is a partner in the Washington office of Ballard Spahr; Zansberg is a partner in the firm's Denver office.
