Nicole Carroll, a senior newsroom executive at The Arizona Republic for more than a decade, has been named editor in chief of USA TODAY, the nation's largest-circulation newspaper and one of the largest news sources in the country.

David Bodney, an attorney at Ballard Spahr in Phoenix who represents The Republic in legal cases, praised Carroll's dedication to upholding First Amendment rights.

"She has fought to preserve journalist privileges in Arizona and has battled to secure access to information in the courts and in public bodies throughout the state," he said. "She's an editor who has really made a difference in Arizona."
