The U.S. Court of Appeals upheld today an Arizona federal court’s ruling for a long-standing legal battle with Scottsdale-based GoDaddy that will likely affect similar patent infringement claims against other technology companies.

RPost Communications Ltd., the Los Angeles-based creator of the RMail secure and certified electronic communications company that also is a patent holding company, claimed GoDaddy’s email marketing product infringed on a broad patent regarding how email works, including how email bounces back when sent to an address that is no longer active.

GoDaddy Inc. (NYSE: GDDY) won the court battle in June 2016 in Arizona, but RPost appealed GoDaddy’s win to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington D.C., where all patent cases go, said Brian LaCorte, a Ballard Spahr partner and head of the firm’s Phoenix intellectual property team that represented GoDaddy in the case.
