Back in 2006, Rutgers University put together arguably its best football season ever, securing the 12th ranked spot in the country with an 11-2 en route to its first ever bowl game. The team’s mantra that year? “Just keep chopping wood," which was also shortened to “The Chop.”

In 2012, the school moved to register “Chop” for selling various types of merchandise, and after various procedural delays, the mark was finally published for opposition in November. Unfortunately, another institution just 90 or so miles south has long been using the name.

That would be The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, a pediatric hospital that’s widely known by the acronym CHOP. The Philly hospital lodged a notice of opposition with the board this week, saying Rutgers’ registration would be confusingly similar. CHOP is represented by Ballard Spahr LLP.
