It’s not a massive investment in mass transit, but bike share adds another mode of transportation in a city in desperate need of options. On Wednesday, Baltimore’s spending board approved a $2.3 million contract with Canadian firm Bewegen Technology Inc. to operate Baltimore’s bike share program.

Jon Laria, chairman of the mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Commission, said biking is an important part of a thriving urban area’s transit mix. He argued bike sharing needs to be part of that mix as the city competes for businesses and residents.
