In the past 48 hours, Amazon has announced a new slate of Echo voice-controlled products, joined an amicus brief supporting Apple in a privacy fight with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said it removed encryption technology from its Fire OS software powering its tablets and then, late on Friday, promised to add it back. “All Fire tablets’ communication with Amazon’s cloud meet our high standards for privacy and security including appropriate use of encryption”

Amazon made the switch when it introduced its new Fire OS 5 in September 2015 with new Fire tablets. “The assumption may be, because the primary goal of the tablet is media consumption, the security bar can be lower”, said Edward McAndrew, a partner in the data security practice at Ballard Spahr.
