Sports Authority is expected to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as early as March. The filing would close many of the sporting goods company's 450 stores across the United States, including 17  sites in Arizona.

"I would suspect they close at least half of them, likely more," Ballard Spahr bankruptcy attorney Craig Ganz said about the status of the Arizona locations.

Sports Authority missed a Feb. 14 deadline to pay $20 million in interest on a $343 million loan, and in January, the company laid off nearly 100 at its corporate office.
