The future of brick-and-mortar retail buildings is changing, and developers will be keen to draw clues from Black Friday shopping sales and comparing traffic patterns for centers that offer entertainment vs. strip malls without amenities. The behavior of millennials and the effect of early openings will also be studied.

“Most developers tend to have centers that follow a theme,” said Michael Pollack of Ballard Spahr LLP. “It will be interesting to compare whether those entertainment centers are outperforming the centers that haven’t been repositioned yet. … The trend is toward those entertainment centers.”
