Andrew E. Walsh, a real estate attorney who negotiates the purchase, sale, and financing of hotels for publicly traded REITs, has joined Ballard Spahr's Washington, D.C., office as of counsel. At Ballard, Mr. Walsh will better serve his current REIT and commercial real estate clients by tapping the firm's substantial pool of resources.

"Matters of Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland law matter to hotel REITs on an everyday basis and Ballard provides services across the board in each of those jurisdictions," Mr. Walsh told Law360.

Mr. Walsh has been expanding his REIT practice for nearly a decade, after gaining numerous contacts in the industry through his work on a landmark deal. "I got lucky, a major REIT had a leveraged buyout in 2007 and I got to represent that target," he said, adding that his trusts work constitutes half of his practice.

"Andrew's experience with diverse and complex real estate and finance transactions, coupled with his lifelong exposure to real estate law, is a tremendous complement to our regional and national real estate teams and provides us with even more resources to respond to our clients’ needs and business objectives," Roger D. Winston, Managing Partner of the firm's Bethesda office, stated. Mr. Walsh will work closely with Mr. Winston, whose practice is focused on condos and development. "That complements some of my prior experience and that's going to be a real focus for me," Mr. Walsh said.
