Although Ballard Spahr’s New Jersey office is smaller than the footprints of other national law firms with a strong presence in the Garden State, it is nevertheless a significant player in this market. The firm’s preeminent labor and employment, real estate, product liability, and litigation practices, and its hiring of one of the state’s top legal minds, have bolstered its profile.

The New Jersey office, located in Cherry Hill, has 22 lawyers representing clients that include three of South Jersey’s top four medical centers—Virtua, Lourdes Health System, and Kennedy Health System. Ballard Spahr’s move into New Jersey in 1999 was a “natural expansion” prompted in part by a longtime client in the state who wanted to see the firm grow beyond Philadelphia, according to firm Chair Mark Stewart.

It’s really the reputation of the lawyers there,” Mr. Stewart said.

That reputation was further elevated in September 2011 when former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto, the first Hispanic American to serve on the state’s highest court, joined the firm.

“There is nobody who has the breadth of substantive knowledge that he has,” said Steven W. Suflas, Managing Partner of the New Jersey office, adding that Justice Rivera-Soto is “intimately familiar” with the inner workings of the state’s courts.
