A Ballard Spahr environmental litigation team led by partners Brendan K. Collins and Robert B. McKinstry, Jr., scored a sizable victory for their clients when a federal appellate court upheld a regulation limiting mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants. Ballard Spahr represented energy clients Calpine Corporation, Exelon Corporation, National Grid Generation LLC, and Public Service Enterprise Group, Inc.

“This ruling is a victory for our clients and for the environment. We were honored to have played a role in it,” said Mr. Collins. “It will bring about a significant improvement in air quality and level the playing field for energy companies nationwide by holding them to the same environmental standards.”

Under the ruling, many of the country’s largest power plants will have to comply with the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards starting in April 2015.
