National law firm Ballard Spahr, which has been working to gain a foothold in Los Angeles, recently added litigator Peter L. Haviland to its L.A. office. Mr. Haviland, who comes from Kaye Scholer, joins the firm as a partner.

Ballard opened Chairman Mark Stewart remarked that the addition shows the firm’s commitment to growing its regional presence. Ballard opened its office in Century City in 2007, but suffered due to the recession.

“The timing was unfortunate for us at the start,” said Mr. Stewart. “That office was opened as a real estate practice and just at probably the wrong time to start a real estate practice anywhere. So we had fits and starts for a few years.”

Ballard has about a dozen lawyers in Los Angeles and is planning to build its litigation, real estate, and intellectual properties there.
