Ballard Spahr's long-standing commitment to helping in the community includes its support of Constitution High School, an inner-city magnet school that concentrates on civics and social science. Pro bono counsel Mary Gay Scanlon said that when the firm heard of the school's purpose, "they jumped on it" as a way of increasing diversity in the legal industry.

Ms. Scanlon said Ballard Spahr volunteered to help the school in 2005, a year before it opened, and has since provided money and staff, created a mock-trial room on campus, offered scholarships and summer internships, and brought students to visit Ballard Spahr to see lawyers at work.

The idea is to create a pipeline of high-school students interested in law by providing mentors and enabling them to envision themselves as lawyers.
