Nearly 300 people gathered at the Kimmel Center on Monday morning to remember the life of Arthur Makadon, former longtime Chair of Ballard Spahr. Mr. Makadon died of lung cancer on July 24 at the age of 70.

Eight of Mr. Makadon’s closest friends and family members spoke during the memorial, including former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Executive Vice President of Comcast Corp. David L. Cohen, and current Ballard Spahr Chair Mark Stewart. Mr. Makadon’s daughter and son-in-law also spoke. All remembered him as a talented attorney, a generous friend, and a keen judge of character.

Ballard Spahr partner Geoffrey A. Kahn summed up Mr. Makadon in his remarks.

"So who was Arthur Makadon?" he asked. "To be sure, he was a superb lawyer and brilliant strategist who could handle the most complex cases and solve the knottiest problems. But that is not what drew us to him. What drew us to him was the irresistible force of his personality. He compelled our attention because he seemed so different and so complicated."
