After leading Ballard Spahr’s Real Estate Department for 25 years, Michael Sklaroff has stepped down as Department Chair. Bart I. Mellits, whom Mr. Sklaroff picked six years ago to serve as Vice Chair of the Department, has been named as his successor.

Mr. Sklaroff formed the Department three years after joining the firm and helped build a practice dubbed a “national powerhouse” by Chambers USA, with 110 lawyers across 11 of Ballard Spahr’s 13 offices. Under Mr. Sklaroff, the firm’s real estate work has grown to encompass finance, development, zoning, leasing, and acquisitions.

Mr. Sklaroff said his decision to relinquish his leadership role stemmed from wanting to spend more time practicing law and focusing on clients. “I love the practice of law,” he said, adding that other changes were coming. “It continues the vitality of the firm.”
